O.C. REGISTER EDITORIAL: With a federal deficit ballooning, spending out of control and the onerous Obama health care overhaul looming, perhaps the biggest impact voters in Orange County could make this election cycle would be to shake up the political majority in Washington. One way to do that, as we have recommended, is to elect Carly Fiorina to the U.S. Senate. Another would be for voters in the 47th Congressional District to elect Republican state Assemblyman Van Tran to replace Democrat Rep. Loretta Sanchez.
The agenda Ms. Sanchez supports in Washington, from our vantage point, has helped create uncertainty in the private sector and undermines progress on many of the biggest issues facing the country – private-sector job creation, bringing down the debt, restoring confidence to capital markets and repeal of the health care overhaul, dubbed Obamacare.
First elected to Congress in 1996, Ms. Sanchez has tried unsuccessfully to paint herself as a moderate, Blue Dog Democrat willing to break with her party on key issues. But, an analysis of her voting record tells a different story, one that backs the agenda of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic leadership almost 100 percent of the time.
She believes the role of government is to level the playing field and touts her work and the administration’s work in saving government jobs, specifically, teachers’ jobs. She told us “You can’t cut spending enough to bring down the current debt.”
…Mr. Tran has made jobs and the economy the focal point of his campaign. He supports reducing restrictions on small business and furthering tax cuts. “As a state assemblyman I have worked to make it easier for small businesses to hire, gotten rid of regulations and fee structures. … That is what I would do at the federal level,” he told us. That’s a start.
He opposes the stimulus package because he says it is full of pork and has burdened the economy. Mr. Tran says the 47th district is a perfect example of the failings of government stimulus spending because jobs promised the district have not materialized.
Mr. Tran similarly calls for the repeal of the new health care law because it will “burden small businesses with all of the mandates.” He notes, though, that the health care system needs work, including access to care for patients with pre-existing conditions.
Mr. Tran does not have national political experience, but neither did Ms. Sanchez. From our freedom values perspective, Mr. Tran would be the better choice in this contest.

California’s Unemployment Rate Jeopardizes Sanchez’s Reelection
Oct/100
In what is shaping up to be a catastrophic election year for Loretta Sanchez, the embattled Democrat just got some more bad news with her state’s unemployment rate at an unacceptable 12.4 percent. As voters head the polls in less than two weeks, they will have California’s dire economic state on their mind. In a time where pink slips are more abundant than new jobs, the outlook for reelection doesn’t look good for out-of-touch Democrats like Sanchez who have rubberstamped their party’s destructive economic agenda. With House Democrats’ prospects of retaining their majority growing slimmer by the day – Will Sanchez survive the anti-Democrat tide?
“Loretta Sanchez set herself up for failure when she rubberstamped her party’s reckless economic policies at the expense of California families,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Now, as she attempts to crawl from the political grave she dug for herself, Sanchez will soon bare the backlash from her tax-and-spend agenda as California voters anxiously wait to hold her accountable in November. With less than two weeks to go – Will Sanchez survive the anti-Democrat tide?”
According to new polling, the votes Democrats have cast over the past couple of years will come back to “haunt” them on Election Day.
“‘A new poll from Ramussen Reports shows votes on the auto bailout and stimulus bill are fueling voter opposition toward incumbents. ‘Incumbents beware: The major votes you’ve cast in Congress over the past couple years appear likely to come back to haunt you this Election Day,’ the organization stated.
“Findings show that 53 percent of likely voters will not support representatives who backed the bailout of GM and Chrysler. Fifty percent of voters will not back incumbents who supported the $787 billion stimulus bill. On healthcare, 50 percent refuse to support incumbents who backed reform.” (Jay Heflin, “Poll: Incumbents who backed bailout, stimulus face tough reelection,” The Hill, 10/20/2010)
With up to 99 seats in play, Republicans are poised make substantial gains in the House:
“With two weeks remaining until Election Day, the political map has expanded to put Democrats on the run across the country – with 99 Democratic-held House seats now in play, according to a POLITICO analysis, and Republicans well in reach of retaking the House.
“It’s a dramatic departure from the outlook one year ago – and a broader landscape than even just prior to the summer congressional recess. As recently as early September, many Republicans were hesitant to talk about winning a majority for fear of overreaching.” (Alex Isenstadt, “99 Dem House seats in danger,” Politico, 10/19/2010)
Van Tran Earns Support Of Taxpayers And Small Business Groups
Oct/100
The National Federation Of Independent Businesses Endorses Tran and the National Tax Limitation Committee Honors Tran With The “Tax Fighter” Award.
This week, Van Tran is proud to receive support from both taxpayer and small business groups. The National Federation of Independent Businesses endorsed Tran in his bid to unseat anti-business Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. Tran was also honored by the National Tax Limitation Committee with the “Tax Fighter” Award for his career fighting higher taxes and fees.
“I’m honored to add the NFIB and the National Tax Limitation Committee endorsements to the growing list of supporters in our effort to unseat overspending Loretta Sanchez,” said Tran.
“As your Congressman, I will fight to help small business and to cut taxes by voting to return the unused stimulus funds to the American people and to de-fund those 15,000 IRS agents that are tasked with taking over the healthcare industry. We can also make the 2003 tax cuts permanent so employers can have some certainty about the future and so that they can get back to doing what they do best – creating jobs.”
The National Tax Limitation Committee (NTLC) has been at work since 1975 and is one of the longest standing pro-taxpayer/entrepreneur organizations in America.
NTLC has scored Congress on taxpayer issues for 25 years and has the longest standing congressional scorecard of any conservative taxpayer organization in America. According to the National Tax Limitation Committee 2010 scorecard on taxpayer issues, Loretta Sanchez only sides with taxpayers 4 out of 100 times.
The National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) has consistently awarded Assemblyman Tran a 100% on his voting record to support small businesses since his election in 2004. NFIB evaluates specific bills and Legislator’s position on those bills that have a significant impact on small businesses in California.
Assemblyman Tran has consistently fought for small businesses and reduced regulations since his election to the Legislature.
Authored AB 640 in 2005 and AB 141 in 2008 to help small businesses allow employees to set more flexible work schedules.
Introduced AB 613 in 2007 which would have reviewed current state-mandated workplace posters in an attempt to simplify the posters to plain language. The plain language ensures employer compliance with labor laws and clearly informs workers of their rights.
Co-authored AB 2X 5 (2009) which allows employees to choose from approved alternative work schedules, including a 10-hour work day, 4 day work week.
Introduced AB 2659 in 2010 to establish a Business Master License Center to serve as a one-stop shop for new and existing businesses to obtain and renew state licenses, forms, and applications. This will streamline government and make it easier for businesses to be successful in California.
Introduced AB 2692 in 2010 establishing a Small Business Reform Commission to review and evaluate state regulations to determine which are harming and preventing job creation and growth in California. The commission with make recommendations to the Legislature of regulations that need to change to make California more business friendly.
Americans Continue to Bankroll Sanchez’s Fannie and Freddie Bailout
Oct/100
Democrats Failure to Reform Fannie and Freddie Will Come Back to Haunt Them
Washington – Loretta Sanchez and her Washington friends already opened up the nation’s pocketbook once to bailout Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – the catalyst of the mortgage crisis – and now the mortgage giants may need anywhere from $73 to $215 billion in additional handouts just to keep afloat. The Democrats’ failure to reform and restructure the two companies is now going to cost taxpayers more money, further contributing the nation’s economic woes and signifying the spending problem that has become a signature of the out-of-touch majority.
“Loretta Sanchez’s runaway spending spree has led this nation into unprecedented debt,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “The economy is spiraling out of control and rather than focusing on getting it back on track, House Democrats have continued to feed their spending addiction on the taxpayer dime by refusing to address the next crisis at Fannie and Freddie. With Election Day quickly approaching, middle-class families will remember the Democrats’ destructive economic agenda that has placed heavy financial burdens on them and led the nation further into debt.”
“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac may need as much as $215 billion in additional capital from the Treasury through 2013 to offset losses and maintain a positive net worth, their federal regulator said on Thursday.
“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, whose programs fund the lion’s share of all new home loans, are at the center of debate as Congress sets to overhaul a U.S. mortgage finance system that contributed to the worst housing crisis since the 1930s.” (Al Yoon, “Fannie and Freddie May Need Another $215 Billion,” ABC News, 10/21/2010)
According to the Wall Street Journal Fannie and Freddie have already cost taxpayers a combined $135 billion and will cost them an additional $19 billion over the next three years.
“Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could cost taxpayers another $19 billion over the next three years, the bailed-out mortgage titans’ regulator said Thursday, but the total tab could nearly double if the U.S. economy slides back into a recession.
“The projections by the Federal Housing Finance Agency were based on the results of ‘stress tests’ it ran on Fannie and Freddie, whose woes have already cost taxpayers a combined $135 billion.” (Nick Timiraos, “Regulator Says Fannie, Freddie Cost at Mercy of Economy,” Wall Street Journal, 10/21/2010)

Now that Van & Loretta Sanchez are TIED on the ballot test—39% of likely voters supporting Van, 39% voting for Loretta, 5% voting for Cecilia Iglesias, and 17% undecided - we need your help.
There’s two weeks left, and all measures indicate Van is within striking distance of winning this race.
The latest polling lists Van & Loretta Sanchez as TIED on the ballot test—39% of likely voters supporting Van, 39% voting for Loretta, 5% voting for Cecilia Iglesias, and 17% undecided.
Van also does much better among the Independent voters—42% favoring Van, compared to 28% favoring Loretta.
This is terrific news for the 47th congressional district. If the campaign doubles its efforts and focuses for the next two weeks, we can win. But this means we need more support.
I know we’ve already asked you for support — Van appreciates every contribution and personal story — but can you consider matching your previous support and forwarding this to five friends?
We need to raise another $50,000 to meet the revised media budget. And unlike Loretta, who receives thousands from Unions and special interests, we’re relying on the voters. The constituents.
The average Americans who are affected by her anti-business policies. Will you donate $25, $50, $100, or more today?
Democrats across the nation are threatened because voters are revolting and punishing incumbents for the poor choices made in the past few years with Obamacare, the auto bailouts, and the ill-managed stimulus packages.
Let’s make sure Loretta hears, loud and clear, just how unhappy the residents of the 47th Congressional district are, and let’s give Van an opportunity to represent the people with legislation that will favor a genuine recovery.
Thank you,

STATEMENT: Clinton Visit to Santa Ana
Oct/100
Our hard work to defeat Loretta Sanchez is showing great results but now she is getting help from other Washington politicians. Former President Bill Clinton is here today to try and salvage some support for Sanchez.
It shows poor judgment on President Clinton’s part to actively campaign for Loretta Sanchez when she is trying to divide communities by race.
Instead of making an unequivocal apology, Sanchez completely fabricated an excuse that Univision host Jorge Ramos asked her a leading question.
Knowing Clinton’s comments on Robert Byrd’s time in the South and his past indiscretions, I’m not surprised he failed to stand up against her race-baiting, lies or trips to the Playboy Mansion.

KOCE DEBATE: After 14 years In Congress, Sanchez Still Needs A Teleprompter To Make A 1 Minute Statement
Oct/100
For Immediate Release
Tuesday, October 13, 2010
CONTACT: George Andrews

This afternoon, Van Tran drew a winning contrast with Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez’s 14 ineffective years in Washington, and Tran’s commitment to stopping Washington’s reckless overspending:
“Today, the truth about Loretta Sanchez was exposed. Van Tran showed Loretta Sanchez to be the overspending Washington politician she is. The difference was clear. Tran‘s record of fighting to cut taxes, reduce spending and build good paying jobs for Orange County was a sharp contrast to Sanchez’s jet-setting on taxpayer dime and trips to the Playboy Mansion. If after 14 years in Congress, you still need a teleprompter to make a 1 minute statement – you are not working hard enough to fix our struggling economy. One bill in 14 years is not going to cut it – especially when it was only to name a post office.” -George Andrews, spokesperson Van Tran for Congress 2010.
